Bergen-Lafayette

Bergen-Lafayette lies west-southwest of Downtown and Liberty State Park. Its borders are loose: Greenville to the south at the light rail, Lincoln Park and West Bergen to the west, Montgomery Street at McGinley Square to the north. Communipaw Avenue runs through it from the Liberty State Park station westward, and Communipaw Junction is where Communipaw, Summit and Garfield Avenues meet Grand Street.

Housing: 19th-century rowhouses, Victorian houses, pre-war and Art Deco apartment buildings, and multi-families. Parts of the neighborhood are in the Communipaw-Lafayette Historic District. The Bergen Hill Historic District, centered on Summit Avenue where the Palisades rise, carries a state designation. Whitlock Cordage, an intact industrial complex along the filled Morris Canal, is in the Lafayette section.

Parks: Liberty State Park, 1,212 acres on Upper New York Bay, opened in 1976 across from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, with ferries from the old Central Railroad of New Jersey terminal. Berry Lane Park, 17.5 acres along Garfield Avenue, opened in June 2016 on former rail yards and industrial lots, one of the largest municipal parks in the city, with courts, fields, a playground and a splash pad.

Transit: three Hudson-Bergen Light Rail stations on the edge of the section, Liberty State Park, Garfield Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive. From Liberty State Park station the light rail runs north to Essex Street, Exchange Place, Newport and Hoboken Terminal. Lafayette Park is the section's own square.
