Notes on Journal Square

Read with the map above. Streets, transit and parks are public record; the sentences about what sells are ours.

Journal Square is named for the Jersey Journal, whose headquarters stood on the square from 1911 to 2013. The Journal Square Transportation Center is why most people know it: the PATH station opened in 1912, is the southern terminus of the Journal Square to 33rd Street line and a stop on the Newark to World Trade Center line, houses PATH's administrative headquarters, and is one of three main NJ Transit bus terminals in the city. The 1970s center sits on a bridge above the Bergen Hill cut. PATH trains run around the clock, so this is the point in the city from which Manhattan can be reached at any hour, and the 9 Howard Place listing noted a NYC bus stop on the corner.

The square has two theaters from the 1920s: the Loew's Jersey, opened 1929 and restored as a moviehouse and venue, and the Stanley, opened 1928. Journal Squared, a three-tower complex next to the station, opened its first 53-story tower in 2017 and finished in 2025. Bergen Square, just south, is where Bergen, the state's first chartered municipality, was settled in 1660. Along Newark Avenue toward India Square the shops are Indian and Filipino run. Lincoln Park, 273 acres, is to the west.

Housing: brownstones, pre-war apartment buildings and frame houses on the side streets, plus the new towers. Our listings here: 45-7 Liberty Avenue, a nine-unit investment building; 9 Howard Place, a restored single-family with a mantel and built-ins; 152 Highland Avenue Unit 28, a two-bedroom condo with a terrace; and Cafe Monticello at 136 Monticello Avenue, listed as a business. Oksana names Journal Square among her areas.
