The Heights

The Heights sits on top of the Palisades, the cliff that runs along the west side of the Hudson. It is bounded by Paterson Plank Road to the north, Route 139 to the south, Hoboken below it to the east and the Hackensack River to the west. Central Avenue is the commercial street, one of the city's neighborhood shopping districts, with more than 240 businesses. Summit Avenue follows an old Hackensack trail, and the Victorian and Edwardian houses along Summit Avenue and Sherman Place are the ones people photograph.

Housing: row houses like 17½ Sherman Place, which we listed, a single-family on three levels with original pine floors, a marble mantle and a 150-foot-deep yard; and the larger houses on the avenues. Prices are set by condition, depth of lot and whether parking comes with the house.

Parks: Pershing Field, 13.5 acres dedicated in 1922, has a pool, a skating rink, track and ball fields, next to Reservoir No. 3, an 1874 reservoir on the National Register now being restored as a wetland park. Riverview-Fisk Park on Palisade Avenue was renovated in 2021 with a new fountain, a spray pad and 89 trees, and holds a Sunday farmers market in season. Washington Park, 21 acres run by Hudson County, straddles the line with Union City.

Transit: the 9th Street-Congress Street light rail station, opened 2004, has elevators up the cliff face to Paterson Plank Road, so Hoboken is minutes away. Buses to Manhattan run on the avenues, and Journal Square PATH is down the other side of the hill. Oksana names the Heights among her areas.
